Anatomy studies and master study

As part of an activity on conceptart.org I've started a 'master study' of sorts. I've basically taken a picture I liked and have studied it's colour and composition and am now trying to recreate it in oils. The original picture is called Springtime by Pierre-August Cot . Below are some progress shots including evidence of my tea drinking addiction.

Mark, Ed and I went to the Amazing Bodies exhibition, hoping to closely study human muscles. Unfortunately the exhibition only had whole plasticised animals (no people) so I studied a skeleton and a horse.

and finally some general anatomy study:

Late night (photo)shopping

I stayed up until 4am practicing a few things. I'm a bit frustrated with my progress at the moment but I'm going to keep working through it.

I think because I've been trying to practice human faces lately and I thought I was improving but when I did these last night, I was struggling. These took too long and still look cartoony and stylised, it's really something I want to work away from.

Face studies

I pretty much spent the whole day listening to Bobby Chiu's podcasts (thanks for the link Mark ;) ). His personality is something to be inspired by, with that mentality I have no doubt he could succeed at anything- art related or not.

Anyway, here are a few faces I drew while I was listening, the bottom right ones (labelled with nr) were done without any references. Still got a long ways to go but I'm glad I found a new source of inspiration.

Symmetry is something that I can't seem to get right, I'm not really sure how to solve that one just yet.

Catching up..

Okay it's more like a month and a half! Anyway here's some more... there's some me and Ed collab in here.

Big update incomming...

Wow I haven't updated for what.. a month? Geez where does the time go? I've been in Melbourne for almost 6 months now.. what is going on!?

Anyway I mostly blame my PC which I have been trying to fix (to no avail yet) and due to repeated formats I have been reluctant and too lazy to continually install the drivers for my scanner and tablet. Anyway I decided to do it last night because I have a few days off work which is ample time to tackle the growing pile of artwork that needs scanning. So the next few posts should catch up to where I'm at now.

Sorry for the lack of responses to comments too, that I can't really make an excuse for but I will be replying soon.. I appreciate the feedback.. so thanks guys :)

Progress...

I better update this before I get too far behind and too lazy.. Here are some sketchbook pages filled over the few days:

A couple of sketchbook pages. Faces, eyes, gesturals plus some rough looking man on the tram and some noses.

A head, no reference.

I did a sketch a while ago for the Kitsune topic for Character of the Week. I was just playing around with painting the face and then gave up on it.. looks nothing like the original sketch..

More noses and anatomy studies.

B&W sketch of a gun-wielding chick... not sure if I will take it any further. Her static pose is bugging me.

More sketchbook pages, the right one was done on public transport, it's unfortunate that the scary hulking naked dude was actually based on someone. The left one was just some random people around the city and down the bottom are the results of me trying to draw Oddworld characters from memory.. Oddworld was one of my big inspirations for drawing critters and 3D modelling.

Anatomy Sketches 07

Some head studies and stuff. I always have trouble with the shape of the head! I usually make the face too small and low. I want to do some male vs female skull studies soon as well because my females sometimes look masculine and my males look girly.

I painted a skull in watercolour, but again stopped paying attention and went into automatic copy mode.. argh.

Daily Sketch Group sketch and Eye Studies

The first pic is just some quick roughs for the Daily Sketch Group topic: "CREEPY HULKING ROBOT HAS SMALL, PALE, HUMAN-LIKE FACE"

The other pics are some studies (of eyes in particular). I tried drawing in pen as knox suggested, it was quite fun actually and is a whole lot cleaner. I'm pretty happy with the eyes (not so much the heads) because most of them are my own, not copied.

CA Sketchmeet Sunday!

Did some gesturals with the group on Sunday :) It was interesting and pretty challenging! We drew people as they walked past the GPO. I tried the suggestion of picking 3 things about a person and then drawing multiple versions of people with the same description. That's why there are a lot of sunnies (it was bright) not because I was trying to avoid eyes (but now that I think of it that's not a bad idea haha)!

Anatomy Sketches 06

More stuff done while I was house sitting... Loomis stuff mixed in with some of my own. Hey the guy on the right of the third pic reminds me of Neko from GTA.. just a fluke unfortunately :)

Anatomy Sketches 05

Just posting some art I did and never got around to scanning!

Most of this is art from Andrew Loomis' book Figure Drawing for all it's Worth with a few dog studies in there (I was house sitting two big dogs at the time!).

This new picture formatting thing is bugging me. If it aint broke, don't break it!
